Definition of the problem: The following article presents the model for a structured decision-making process in intensive neonatal care. The model has been developed during the last 3 years by an interdisciplinary group of physicians, nurses and a hospital minister under the guidance of an ethicist. The model is an alternative to the decision-making process either through static guidelines and rules or through situational ethics with no general rules at all. The model is meant to be a realm of security (...) for the premature or handicapped newborn against the arbitrary decision-making of the doctors or parents. At present, the model for a structured decision-making process is being evaluated within the context of an interdisciplinary project sponsored by the National Foundation of Science of Switzerland. Bernays has pointed out that, in order to prove the consistency of classical number theory, it is necessary to extend Hilbert's finitary stand‐point by admitting certain abstract concepts in addition to the combinatorial concepts referring to symbols. The abstract concepts that so far have been used for this purpose are those of the constructive theory of ordinals and those of intuitionistic logic. It is shown that the concept of a computable function of finite simple type over the integers can be used instead, where no other procedures of constructing such functions are necessary except simple recursion by an integral variable and substitution of functions in each other. ZusammenfassungIn einem typenfreien formalen System, das widerspruchsfrei ist und alle Begriffe der klassischen Mathematik darzustellen vermag, können nicht alle Gesetze der klassischen Aussagenlogik gelten. Es entsteht daher das Problem, die aussagenlogischen Eigenschaften formaler Systeme allgemein zu untersuchen. Unter gewissen Voraussetzungen in aussagenlogischer Hinsicht wird die « aussagenlogische Vollständigkeit » und die « aussagenlogische Widerspruchsfreiheit » eines formalen Systems durch das Tertium non datur beziehungsweise durch die Schlussregel des Ex falso quodlibet charakterisiert. On développe des méthodes de décision pour ces règles d'inférence syntactiques qui sont valables dans chaque système formel sous les suppositions données et pour ces régles d'inférence qui sont valables dans chaque système complet ou consistarit au point de vue de la logiqire des propositions.In a formal system without types which contains no contradictions and is able to represent all notions of classical mathematics, all the laws of classical propositional calculus cannot be valid. From this fact ensues the problem generally to explore the properties of formal systems from the point of view of the propositional calculus. Under certain assumptions conrerninq the propositional expressions the « propositional completeness » and the « propositional consistency » of a formal system is characterized through the tertium Ron datur, respectively through the inference rule of the ex falso quodlibet. There are decision procedures for the syntactical inference rules which in every formal system are valid under the given assumptions and for the syntactical inference rules of every formal system which is complete or consistent with respect to the propositional calculus. The position of classical studies in our time is paradoxical in several respects. When at the end of the so-called Middle Ages a great new interest in ancient Greek literature was aroused by Greek fugitives from the East, spreading from Italy to other countries of Western Europe, the study of the great Greek authors was beset with considerable difficulties. All the manuscripts which the Greek fugitives brought with them or which had been transferred to the West at an earlier time (...) and were now rediscovered, were to some extent corrupted by copyists’ mistakes and/or mechanical corruptions, and even where they were not corrupted their content was in many places not easy to understand because the historical background for the understanding was lacking. In some cases doubts arose concerning the authenticity of works ‘attributed to certain authors. To meet these needs, the methods of textual criticism were developed by the humanists of the Renaissance and later perfected and supplemented by various kinds of historical criticism after a second revival of interest in classical antiquity, which was promoted by Winckelmann in the 18th century.
